An annual survey carried out by Pôle Emploi, called “Workforce Requirements” highlights the recruitment outlook for 2023. Good news: companies continue to hire massively and they should still recruit no less than 3 million people over the next 12 months.

In this study conducted among companies between October and December last, we learn that the sectors with the greatest recruitment needs are services to individuals (38.3%), services to companies (23.6%), trade (12.2%), industry (9.3%), construction (8.6%) and finally agriculture (8.1%). In 7 cases out of 10, hiring intentions are driven by companies with fewer than 50 employees, explain our colleagues from West France.

The 10 professions in search of labor

Unsurprisingly, the professions that are highlighted in the Pôle Emploi report cannot be replaced by AI. These are manual or relational jobs such as those in the hotel and catering industry (café and restaurant waiters, apprentices and kitchen workers, cooks) or agriculture (wine growers, arboriculturists, pickers, agricultural workers, etc.).

In the Top 10 professions that will recruit the most in 2023, there are also care and support professions (caregivers, home helpers, nurses, childcare auxiliaries), maintenance workers (domestic and home), professionals of socio-cultural animation.

A map with the posts by region

Below is a map that shows the number of recruitments in 2023, region by region. Coastal (and tourist) areas such as the Côte d’Azur or the Atlantic coast will have a strong need for seasonal labor to ensure their summer success. France should further confirm its status as champion of tourism with a foreign (and especially American) clientele which is coming back in force and locals who favor 55% of holidays in France.

If the staff for the summer season should be relatively easy to find, the Pôle Emploi report highlights the trades that have the greatest difficulty in recruiting. These are not the hotel and catering trades but rather those in construction (roofers, plumbers), industry (boilermakers, sheet metal workers, qualified blacksmiths, welders, etc.), automobile repair (bodybuilder), or health.
