– You should choose to study something you are passionate about. Then you will be the best. There will be a labor shortage in Norway for many years to come, so the opportunities are great.
That’s what Sølvi Spilde Monsen, executive director of the recruitment agency Manpower, says.

Coordinating admission opens the possibility to apply for studies on 1 February. The application deadline expires on 1 March or 15 April, depending on which study you wish to enter.
– Will increase
Monsen expects an employee’s market for several years to come, and advises students to follow their heart. Nevertheless, there are some industries that stand out.
– There is a need in most subjects right now, but we see particularly high demand in banking, finance and insurance. The energy sector also has a shortage of people, in addition to the fact that it is a growing industry, says Monsen.
As an engineer in the energy sector, you are almost guaranteed a job, according to Monsen.

– The demand in this industry is only going to get bigger in the coming years, especially in green energy. Wind power, wave power and battery production are likely to increase in the future.
Information and communication technology (ICT) is also an industry with a high demand for labour. This particularly applies to positions within programming, operation and maintenance.
There will also always be a need for people in the public sector.
– Schools and nurseries are crying out for labour, and so is the healthcare system. The lack of people in these industries is largely due to high levels of sickness absence, says Monsen.
– An exceptional need
At Finn, there is one profession in particular that stands out with the most job advertisements.
– The engineering profession, especially within three subject areas, is the profession that, according to our figures, needs the most people right now, says Christopher Ringvold, who is a job analyst and head of Finn Jobb.

According to Ringvold, engineers in electrical engineering, mechanics and automation are the subject areas with the most job advertisements.
In second place among professions with the most vacancies, we find craftsmen. Ringvold, on the other hand, believes that uncertainty is linked to demand in the industry going forward.
– In the building and construction industry, there has been an exceptional need for labor for a long time. However, this has stagnated a bit this year, and it is probably one of the industries where there is greater uncertainty about the future, says Ringvold.
He explains the uncertainty in the industry with the change in temperature we see in the housing market.
– Not seen before
Sales and management are number four and five on Finn’s list of the most in-demand professions right now. In fifth place, a newcomer has appeared.
– We have seen strong growth in the consulting industry and we have not seen this profession on our top five list before.
– As a consultant or advisor, there are many good opportunities right now, but this is a market that we know is strongly affected by the economic cycle, says Ringvold.
According to Finn’s job advertisements, it is banking, finance, insurance and construction that seek the most advisers.
Warns against mistakes
According to Johannes Sørbø, senior advisor at NAV, there are two mistakes in particular that can be made when it comes to choosing a career path.
– In a long working life, it is important to work with something you like, and perhaps even have some talent for. Make sure you choose something you will enjoy, he says.
According to Sørbø, the second, and perhaps biggest, mistake one can make is not completing the vocational certificate or education.

– We see a decidedly high rate of unemployment among those who drop out of education and do not complete it. As long as you finish, you shouldn’t be worried about not getting a job, says Sørbø.
There are some fields of study where the battle for the relevant positions is intense, such as humanities and social sciences.
– New graduates with these educations to a somewhat greater extent get jobs that are not relevant to the education. Unemployment is relatively low, but it is simply more difficult to get a relevant job.
