Video game adaptations have always been a double-edged sword. While there are films like Uncharted that become big financial hits, there are always those that do Total failures like Netflix’s Resident Evil series. The announcement by Hideo Kojima that he wanted to release his masterpiece Death Stranding as a cinema film came as a surprise. In an interview he spoke about his vision for implementation spoken and why video game adaptations failed in the past.

Death Stranding film shouldn’t be a “classic” blockbuster

Hideo Kojima has in one detailed interview with IGN talked about his ideas and visions for the planned Death Stranding movie. He has a clear idea for the implementation and would much rather have one than a classic Hollywood blockbuster art house film to produce. For this he has engaged the Canadian producer Alex Lebovici. “I received a lot of offers, but I never wanted to do a blockbuster film,” Kojima said in an interview.


“Alex Lebovici from Hammerstone Studios shared my vision on this. There were a lot of pitches with famous actors and big explosions, but what’s explosion in Death Stranding (buy now €20.98 )lost? Earning money is also not something that interests me. I’m aiming for more of an art house approach […]”.

Hideo Kojima wants to do better with the Death Stranding film

In his view, video game adaptations in the past have tried too hard “pleasing gamers”which is why they very similar to video games and mostly flopped. At the same time, he ironically says there “is no real need” to adapt video games to movies, which is why he wrote a “I want to go in a direction that no one has tried before”.

At this point, it’s unclear if any characters from the video game template will make an appearance at all, or if it’ll focus on a completely different aspect of Death Stranding’s whimsical world. On There is currently no release date for the film, with a release is however 2024 at the earliest to reckon with.
