• The government has set up an online simulator to estimate the cost of the registration certificate (ex-carte grise) according to the type of vehicle, the department and the energy.
  • The cost of the registration certificate consists of four taxes and a fee
  • The simulator also allows you to know the amount of the ecological penalty

Have you just bought a new or used vehicle and would like to know the cost of your car registration document? Good news, the government has just set up an online simulator to help you calculate the amount of taxes and fees to pay to obtain your registration certificate (ex-gray card).

Accessible on the service-public.fr website, this simulator asks you to fill in several pieces of information about your vehicle, such as the date of entry into service, the administrative power, the energy, the CO2 emission rate, the weight or even the purchase price. You must also indicate your department of residence, because the regional tax varies according to the regions. The simulator then tells you the cost of the gray card

Gray card: what do you pay for in the registration certificate?

The registration certificate therefore includes various taxes and fees that vary according to several criteria. It therefore consists of four taxes and a fee.

First, your registration certificate includes the regional tax which depends on the number of tax horses of the vehicle and the rate voted by the region. Some regions grant exemptions or reductions for clean or collector’s vehicles. The tax for the development of professional training actions in transport, which amounts to €2.76 for all vehicles, is added to the invoice.

Then comes the tax on polluting vehicles, also called ecological penalty, which applies to new or imported vehicles emitting more than 133 g of CO2 per km. Certain vehicles are exempt from this tax, such as electric, hybrid or natural gas vehicles. Finally, the registration certificate includes the fixed tax of €11 (which corresponds to the cost of manufacturing the registration certificate) and the fee for the delivery of the registration certificate, which amounts to €2.76.

The simulator also lets you know if you benefit from an exemption or a reduction in the ecological penalty, depending on the date of purchase of the vehicle, its mode of supply or even your personal situation (disability, family numerous…).

To pay for your registration certificate, you can complete the process online on the website of the National Agency for Secured Documents (ANTS), using FranceConnect and a bank card. You can also go to an automotive professional authorized by the Ministry of the Interior, who will take care of the process for you.
