The January 9th is an important date for all Apple fans. On 9 January sixteen years ago, the first iPhone, the leader of the product series, was presented flagship of Apple, even more than Macs and iPods.

iPhones can be considered Apple’s flagship products, considering the circumstances of the first announcement (and what followed) and especially the number of units sold. Let’s focus on the first aspect.

Fans of the first hour will remember the hype around that event, which in fact marked a before and after in the history of Apple and telephony in general. iPhone, at the time, was presented as a product in all respects “revolutionary”, which combined at least three devices/technologies: iPod with touch screen, mobile phone and Internet.

As you know, it was Steve Jobs in person to present the first iPhone. He chose to do it several months in advance of the market debut, in order to avoid any possible leak. Those were obviously different times, the iPhone had and continued to have its own charm for some time, also thanks to Jobs’ politics and disruptive advertising. Just think, speaking of advertising, that six out of ten Americans knew the release date of the iPhone before its launch.

The actual release took place on June 29, 2007. In the United Kingdom, France and Germany it arrived five months later, in November 2007, while the Austrians and Irish had to wait for spring 2008. In Italy, however, it never officially arrived.

Since then, as they say, a lot of water has flown under the bridge. Not only has the iPhone market predictably expanded, but Apple’s offer has also become wider, with at least 4 models offered each year. In all, they are 2.32 billion iPhone units sold from 2007 to todaya number that speaks for itself, attesting – among other things – that iPhone has always had a certain appeal on the general public. Without a doubt, users recognize its uniqueness and consistency, but it remains to be seen whether iPhone will be able to resist even the challenges of the 2020s, with new rules to comply with and consumers looking for increasingly futuristic products (see the foldable smartphone).
