Google Docs, or Google Documents, includes several advanced tools for editing text through the browser. One of them is the possibility of numbering pages, useful in formatting files.
Google’s tool allows you to add the numbers in the header or footer of the text, with different customization options. In addition, it includes the feature in the mobile app (Android | iOS) and can be an alternative in emergencies away from the computer.
If you need to follow the ABNT standards for a job, it is important to pay attention to the numbering requirements:
- The page count starts on the cover page, but is only displayed from the introduction page;
- The number needs to be positioned on the right side of the header on the sheet;
- The number font follows the same choice as the text, but in size 10.

- Open a file in Google Docs;
- Select “Format” from the menu and click on “Page Numbers”;
- Choose placement and add numbering.

- In the Google Docs app, select the pencil icon;
- Then tap the “+” symbol;
- Press “Page number” and choose one of the formatting templates.
How to start numbering after the cover page
To follow the ABNT standard and insert the numbers only after the cover page, you need to apply a section break. Know how:
- In Docs, scroll down to the intro page, which will display the count;
- Click “Insert”, select “Break” and choose “Section Break (Next Page)”. The editor creates a new page, but you can delete it;
- Double-click the top of the intro sheet to open the header;
- Uncheck “Link to previous section”. Then click on “Options” and select “Page numbers”;
- Make sure the option “Continue from previous section” is active and press “Apply”. It is not necessary to change the other settings;
- Select the numbering and right-align the text.
