Former Chancellor Angela Merkel (68) wants to give insights into her life and her tenure in her memoirs. Together with her longtime office manager Beate Baumann, she is working through her childhood, but also her chancellorship, said the CDU politician on Saturday evening at an event at the Leipzig Book Fair.

“That creates clarity – bit by bit – but also requires concentration.” After the end of her chancellorship, she is doing well, said Merkel, emphasizing: “I’m satisfied.”

The visit of the former chancellor aroused great interest among the visitors to the Leipzig Book Fair in advance. In front of a full house, Merkel spoke with the editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit”, Giovanni di Lorenzo, about her East German roots, her chancellorship, but also about her current life.

She’s making progress on her way to becoming Chancellor AD, Merkel said, smiling. “I can’t walk the streets unnoticed yet.”
