“This last semester has been a bit of a disaster. I didn’t get accepted into the study abroad program I had applied for, which demotivated me a bit, especially when I think back to all the time it took me to prepare my case.

And then my administrative problems with the university did not stop. At the beginning of the semester, I went to the secretariat several times a week to try to solve my schedule problems. (difficulties mentioned in Sarah’s last testimony, editor’s note)but everything was always complicated, I had to send new e-mails, ask the teachers for approval… It took me almost more time than my lessons.

Sarah, 25, in English L2 LLCE

To put words, and images, on the difficulties of students, hit hard by inflation after two years of the Covid crisis, “l’Obs” will meet throughout the year with students and students including Sarah, 25, in her second year of a degree in foreign and regional languages, literatures and civilizations (LLCE) in English in Lyon. The young woman, financially independent, had to juggle her lessons and odd jobs for more than a year. Solutions from the Crous finally allowed him to concentrate on his studies. After a first episode in October, then another in November, she again agreed to give herself up, this time on the galleys that clutter her mind.

We ended up finding a solution but that doesn’t suit me, since I find myself with subjects that I didn’t choose and that have nothing to do with my project, in particular marketing or social psychology, so that I wanted courses more focused on business and geopolitics. It was DIY. I really came close to stopping everything, I didn’t go to class for three weeks. But I have the impression that there is not a student who has not wanted to let go of everything at least once.

“Live my student life”, a year with Sarah, Océane, Alexandre and the others

In addition to that, the blockages of the university against the pension reform lasted several weeks, and in the long run created tensions within my class. I, who was starting to find a little motivation in April, did not help, in particular because of the distance learning courses which gave the impression of being back in confinement.

“I hope that next year will be the year of stability”

I still have a week of finals to go, there are big stakes because in many subjects, this will be my only grade because of blockages. Above all, I have to succeed because I would like to change course and university. The LLCE (Bachelor’s degree in foreign and regional languages, literatures and civilizations) discouraged me, it is too focused on grammar, English literature, it’s a bit made to become a teacher and I feel like I’m wasting my time. I would like to continue in English but go towards international relations, political studies. It’s a goal that kept me going this semester, because you need a good record to get there.

Again, it’s a big preparation with a lot of expectation. I was helped by a guidance counsellor, but even for her, the platforms and university procedures seemed complicated! If I am not taken, I will grit my teeth until the end of the license, before continuing towards a master’s degree in geopolitics or in European and international studies, to be able to work in political institutions in the future.

“The scholarship and accommodation from the Crous took a huge weight off my shoulders”

This academic year has been a year of great change. I had had a bad time with my L1 because I had to work at night to live. In L2, I got a scholarship, student accommodation, I’m trying to reorient myself, and the university exhausted me mentally. I hope that next year will be the year of stability, of adjusting my student journey, so that I can finally do the things that I enjoy. This will be the last year of my license, I reach a level where the things I learn must really serve me, with I hope an internship that will make things even more concrete! »
