'I think they should be deported': about detainees

Five of seven accused of participating in the attack on two NYPD officers in Times Square in late January appeared in court this Friday. They all pleaded not guilty. Three are in custody at Rikers Island and two in ICE custody.

“I think they should be deported to Venezuela, and I think that they come here to commit crimes, we all fall into the same bag, the people who come to work, to pay taxes and do things correctly, it is a shame to read and see that type of news,” he says. Susana López, an immigrant in the city.

Yohenry Brito, identified as the instigator of the attack, faces several charges, including second-degree assault and violent crimes.

Although his $15,000 bail was paid in cash, Brito will remain in police custody until prosecutors determine where the money came from and whether the person who made the payment can guarantee Brito’s appearance in court.

In the case of Darwin Gomez-Izquiel, the prosecution requests $100,000 bail.

Gomez-Izquiel, charged with assault and government obstruction following his release on January 29, 2024.

In addition, let us remember that just fifteen days after his release, Gomez-Izquiel allegedly participated in a robbery at a Macy’s store in Queens, according to authorities.

Separate from these charges, Gomez-Izquiel was initially charged with Second Degree Robbery, but was eventually charged by the Queens District Attorney’s Office with Petit Larceny, a charge to which he pleaded not guilty at his initial hearing.

Yorman Reveron, charged with assault, is also in custody on $100,000 bail.

Kelvin Servita Arocha and Wilson Juarez are in ICE custody with bonds of $15,000 and $1, respectively.

The Police Benevolent Association indicates that these bonds are intended to stop the deportation process so that they face their actions.

Two more accused of this attack appeared in court this week.

“I agree with them prosecuting him, and deporting him, they definitely cannot stay here, they cannot stay here, because they are abusing the system, it is a country that gives you a helping hand,” says José Rodríguez.

The next court date for the five defendants who appeared this Friday will be Tuesday, April 2.
