B12 or cobalamin has the largest and most complex chemical structure of all vitamins. This water-soluble nutrient is essential for the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system. In addition, it is fundamental in the synthesis of hemoglobin and different proteins.

Vitamin B12 synthesizes a large number of intestinal bacteria that are usually reproduced in the human body. However, this type of B12 is of very minimal benefit, since in its totality it is eliminated by the hours, according to the Cuban Journal of Hematology, Immunology and Hemotherapy.

Symptoms of Vitamin B12 Deficiency

If not treated, vitamin B12 deficiency can cause anemia, fatigue, muscle weakness, intestinal problems, nerve damage and mood disorders, according to Mayo Clinic.

  • Seas. They are especially present when going up or down stairs or in cases where you tend to lose balance.
  • Memory leaks. Patients with vitamin B12 deficiencies are likely to think that they have dementia or Alzheimer’s, especially if they are older.
  • Ants and pinchazos. When there is a lack of vitamin B12, a change in the peripheral nerves (polyneuropathy) can occur, characterized by itching, numbness, changes in sensitivity or pain in the hands or feet.
  • Anemia. Megaloblastic or macrocytic anemia can occur. It is characterized by a very large size of red blood cells or scarcity.
  • Fatigue. In many cases, a lack of vitamin B12 can lead to exhaustion and lack of energy, even after resting.
