Illegal migration on the rise: police union against expanding border controls

19,627 illegal border crossings – Better equipment for federal police demanded

Osnabruck. The number of illegal border crossings is increasing. However, the police union (GdP) is against expanding the permanent border controls based on the model of the German-Austrian border. Andreas Roßkopf, head of the federal police and customs department at the GdP, told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ): “That would have no real effect.” In the end, it would be about several thousand kilometers of internal Schengen borders that would have to be controlled. The federal police are technically and personnel not in a position to carry out fixed controls at borders with neighboring German countries.

According to “NOZ”, the number of registered illegal border crossings had recently increased significantly. In the first three months, the federal police recorded 19,627 cases, 50 percent more than in the same period last year. Officials at the German-Austrian border registered 3,674 border crossings. According to the police unionist Roßkopf, however, there is a clear shift in the migration movement towards the Polish border. The federal police told the NOZ that more than 4,000 illegal border crossings had been detected here, even without permanent border controls.

Most recently, the state interior ministers of Brandenburg, Saxony and Baden-Württemberg spoke out in favor of internal controls on the border with Poland and Switzerland. At the asylum summit of the federal and state governments last week, an expansion of the controls was recorded in the final protocol “depending on the situation”. Instead of expanding border controls, trade unionist Roßkopf called for better equipment for the federal police: “What helps are modern border controls: powerful vehicles with the appropriate technology. Drones for monitoring the borders from the air. And better cooperation with the border police from neighboring countries. ” This is how illegal migration can be curbed. “We won’t stop them.”
