Imagination, the famous hardware company behind PowerVR GPUs, announced on Tuesday (10) a new line of graphics chips that promises to bring support for ray tracing to cell phones and tablets of different categories — from basic to the most advanced.

IMG “DXT” is the new line of graphics hardware for mobile devices from the brand that aims to make ray tracing more popular. For this, there are three models of GPUs that can be integrated into mobile platforms: IMG DXT-8-256, for basic and intermediate cell phones and tablets; IMG DXT-48-1536 and IMG DXT-72-2304, for top of the line models.

All settings are ideal for a variety of applications, from shading to high-end graphics to AAA titles. The chips have support for Vulkan API Fragment Shading Rate technologywhich reduces the number of fragments processed while increasing the graphics performance of the device.

“Our new IMG DXT GPU cores are scalable and work at multiple deployment levels, starting with basic graphics integrations, up to flagship SocS with ray-traced desktop graphics,” the company states.

Models have features such as 2D dual rate texturing, embedded firmware processor with RISC-V instructions, native support for compressions with ASTC HDR algorithm and piped data masters

The DXT-72-2304 GPU is the most advanced of the trio with promises to reach 72 GTexels/s and 2.25 TFLOPs of performance in FP32, as well as 9 TOPS in processing power for tasks with artificial intelligence, accelerating tasks such as post-processing effects in games and processing filters in computational stills.

According to Imagination, performance per GPU core is up to 50% higher when compared to products in the IMG CXT line. The company guarantees that, thanks to the Photon architecture, its level 4 ray tracing implementation is the most efficient on the market.
