Consumers paid in April, on average, 3.9 times more than what agricultural producers charged for their products, according to a survey carried out by the Argentine Confederation of Medium Enterprises (CAME).

The Origin and Destination Price Index (IPOD) showed that consumers paid $3.9 (shelf/destination) for every $1 that producers received for the agrifood that make up the basket.

The same report establishes that the participation of the producer explained 23% of the final sale prices, and the egg producers had the highest participation (52.9%), while the lemon producers had the lowest (5.9%). ).

Regarding the livestock basket, the behavior of prices in the 5 products and by-products that comprise it implied that the consumer paid 3 times more than what the producer received.

Regarding the fruit and vegetable basket, the prices of the 19 fruits and vegetables that make up the IPOD basket multiplied by 6.7 times in April, 13% more than in March, “an increase explained, in large part, by products such as lettuce , the pepper and the round tomato”, pointed out from CAME.

According to the entity’s report, the products that presented the highest monthly IPOD gaps were lemon (16.9 times), onion (15), orange (10.1), tangerine (6.9) and carrot (6,7).

In the case of lemon, which registered the largest gap in April between the prices of origin and destination, “prices decreased at both ends of the chain: producer (-24.3%) and consumer (-15), while At source, the drop responded to the low prices recorded in Salta and Tucumán, since producers are selling in the domestic market at cost price -or even lower-, as exports decrease due to the rise in internal costs and loss of competitiveness “, they explained from CAME.

Those that registered the lowest IPOD gaps in that month were three of animal origin, one fruit and one vegetable: eggs (1.9 times), chicken (2.3), strawberries (2.8), chard ( 3.1) and milk (3.3).
