China announced on Saturday January 14 that at least 60,000 people had died in hospitals in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic, since the lifting of health restrictions in the country a month ago.

“A total of 59,938 (deaths) were recorded between December 8, 2022 and January 12, 2023”told the press an official of the health authorities, Jiao Yahui.

This report does not take into account deaths recorded outside medical facilities.

Three years of draconian restrictions

After three years of some of the most draconian restrictions in the world, China abruptly lifted most of its health measures against the coronavirus in early December. The number of patients has grown rapidly. Hospitals find themselves overwhelmed with elderly patients and crematoriums appear overwhelmed by the influx of bodies.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is critical of China’s reluctance to release reliable data on the Covid wave, saying the number of deaths from the pandemic was there ” very undervalued”in the words of Dr. Michael Ryan, WHO Emergency Manager.
