A professor found similarities between several copies of faculty students. Students confessed to using ChatGPT artificial intelligence to write their assignment.
These are similarities that have put the chip in the ear of Stéphane Bonvallet. This professor of handicapology at the faculty of Lyon had asked his students to do a homework on “the main features of the medical approach to disability in Europe”. During the correction, he identifies an identical construction, similar arguments, but without ever turning into plagiarism.
Not directly cheating
Faced with the doubt of cheating, Stéphane Bonvallet tells to progress discussing it directly with a student. She then recognizes that half of the promotion of 14 students have used ChatGPT. This artificial intelligence is the flagship tool of the moment and is bluffing the whole world.
The professor was very annoyed by this admission. This is not directly a cheat. “Having no framework currently prohibiting this practice, I was forced to note them”, explains Stéphane Bonvallet to the local daily. With grades ranging from 10 to 12.5, the teacher concluded that the seven assignments from ChatGPT would all score 11.75.
“This practice worries me,” says Stéphane Bonvallet. “It poses a real problem of integration of knowledge, because the students no longer need to carry out the slightest research to compose.”
ChatGPT banned in New York
Especially since the use of super AI would become widespread. Of his colleagues, three-quarters have faced dodgy homework in recent weeks. The use of ChatGPT would be particularly widespread in high schools, explains the professor. However, he admits that he never thought that an artificial intelligence would be powerful enough to write assignments for Master’s students.
In the United States, the schools have already decided. The use of ChatGPT has been banned in New York establishments. Here again, the negative effects on learning are singled out. Capable of generating just about anything, from school assignments to funny stories to cooking recipes, teachers are mostly concerned about the accuracy of the generated content. Since its launch, several users have realized that ChatGPT texts may contain false information and misleading explanations.
