The Lille artist presents his series called “Open Your Eyes” in the art gallery of the Minorelle garden. Beyond the aesthetic enhancement of the alphabet for the visually impaired, these paintings and sculptures carry messages.

With Alexandre Wirth, braille writing takes on an artistic dimension. The work of this self-taught painter, who has been creating for more than twenty years, is an invitation to open your eyes to the graphic beauty of this alphabet that, in the end, no one looks at. The art of braille is highlighted on canvases, most of the time, of black color. The lighter dots, sometimes transformed into spheres, stand out.

In the same spirit, Alexandre Wirth also imagined translucent sculptures. “I borrowed Braille graphics to address sighted people. I form messages and I will lead the observer to have to decipher in order to understand. These messages can be music lyrics, passages from books or themes from Company”, explains Alexander Wirth.

Messages with different readings

No longer suffer, encourage the viewer to be an actor in his existence. With Open Your EyesAlexandre Wirth expresses the desire to make the visitor participative, far from the phenomenon of social networks. “The criticism is that today everything happens easily, for free. We consume and we move on. If we want to understand, we will have to stop, decipher”, details the artist.

To decipher his messages, you have to take a step back and observe his works from a few meters away. “On this triptych, we have the message of endangered animals”, explains Alexandre Wirth, pointing to one of the paintings on display. “It is written ‘end’ in three parts, E, N and D. It’s a way of denouncing what we are destroying and thinking about what we can do to prevent this destruction” he adds. But beware, Alexandre Wirth has more than one string to his bow. Depending on the light and the angle of view, his works tell different things. Open your eyes wide!
