Sales in supermarkets during October fell 1.6% in relation to the same month last year, while in wholesale self-services they fell 7.1% year-on-year, the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) reported on Tuesday.

On the other hand, operations in large shopping centers or malls, based on the measurement at constant prices, grew 8.2% compared to the same month of the previous year.

As detailed by INDEC, total sales at constant prices in supermarkets accumulated from January to October 2022 an increase of 1.9% compared to the same period in 2021.

The groups of items with the most significant increases in total sales at current prices were: “Greengrocers and greengrocers”, 128.0%; “Prepared foods and rotisserie”, 109.4%; “Electronics and household items”, 104.0%; and “Bakery”, 99.9%, in interannual terms.

Sales in the supermarket salesroom accounted for 96.7% of the operations, while those of the online channel represented 3.3% of the total.

Regarding wholesale self-services, the accumulated January-October 2022 presented a decrease in sales level of 0.6% at constant prices compared to the same period in 2021.

Total sales at current prices had more significant increases compared to the same month of the previous year in: “Greengrocers and greengrocers”, 144.2%; “Bakery”, 112.6%; “Drinks”, 89.8%; “Warehouse” 89.1%; and “Meats”, 83.9%.

Within this segment, 40.5% of total sales were made with cash; 21.1% via debit cards, and 19.2% with credit cards.

Finally, total sales at current prices in shopping centers or malls had an increase of 120% compared to the same month of the previous year, which represented a real increase of 8.2% in the period.

Total sales at current prices in October 2022, compared to sales for the same month of the previous year, reflected that the items with the greatest increase were: “Fun and recreation”, 168.3%; “Food court, food and kiosks”, 148.7%; “Electronics, household appliances and computing”, 135.9%; and “Perfumery and pharmacy”, 127.5%.

Finally, the items that led sales at current prices in shopping centers were: “Clothing, footwear and leather goods”, which represented 44.0% of the total, followed by “Food court, food and kiosks”, with 12.7%, the category “Sports clothing and accessories”, with 12.1% and “Electronics, household appliances and computing”, with 11.3%.
