US basketball player Brittney Griner will write a book about her 10-month captivity in Russia. In it, the star player will describe her “hard and surreal time” as well as the “terrible aspects of everyday life in a penal colony for women”, Griners Verlag Alfred A. Knopf announced on Tuesday. The so far untitled memoirs should appear in the first half of next year.

Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison for drug smuggling by a Russian court in early August 2022 and then released in a spectacular prisoner exchange in December.

The 32-year-old spent a total of almost ten months in Russian custody after cartridges for e-cigarettes with small amounts of cannabis oil were found on her at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport in February 2022.

In a statement, the two-time Olympic gold medalist described her arrest as the beginning of an “unbelievable chapter” in her life that she is only now able to share with the public. Griner’s detention only ended when the US released notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout in exchange. (AFP)
