The new low-end CPUs from AMD and Intel promise a massive boost in performance for inexpensive notebooks. Florian Müssig tested the first two notebooks with the CPUs. The 550 euro HP 17 has installed the new AMD Ryzen 3 7320U. Intel’s Core i3-N305 – with 8 cores – is in the Acer Aspire 3 Spin 14 for 650 euros! The performance level of the new CPUs fits, but both notebooks leave potential.

If you are annoyed by poor WiFi coverage in your apartment or house, you will quickly end up with mesh systems that bring fast internet to every corner with multiple nodes. Ernst Ahlers tested seven systems from AVM (Fritzbox), D-Link and TP-Link, among others, for c’t. He gives tips on how to optimally set up the nodes in the apartment.
For remote PC help, most use the remote maintenance programs TeamViewer and AnyDesk. However, they are sometimes annoying with advertising for the paid versions – you also have to trust the manufacturers if you send your data via their server. Niklas Dierking and Jan Schüßler looked at the alternatives MeshCentral, Remotely and RustDesk. They are open source and can be installed on your own server. Niklas created Docker containers for RustDesk and MeshCentral that make installation easier.
