Initiative to mitigate the heat in parks and beaches

We got a thermometer and did a simple exercise in two very popular places in Miami Beach – especially in the summer. We wanted to bring a message to you about the risk of doing our favorite activities in extreme heat and how to prepare.

Beyond the topic of conversation, it is a matter of concern as we enter the 6th week in South Florida with heat advisories or excessive heat advisories.

In the hundreds of parks in our region, some brave the high temperatures and continue their exercise and distraction routines. In Miami, the heat has prompted the city commission to consider a strategy to add cooling zones and potentially more trees in public spaces. Commissioner Sabina Covo promotes the idea.

“It is super key that we have more trees, spaces so that the community can come to have a picnic or something like that.”

But not even the inclement temperature stopped bathers today in Miami Beach, with some or little clothing, under a stinging sun and on a sand whose temperature can reach more than 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

Erika Benítez, spokeswoman for the Miami Dade Fire Department, says: “Avoid outdoor activities during peak hours of the day and we recommend that you do those activities during the early morning or afternoon hours.

The authorities recommend special care with the most vulnerable: children, the elderly and pets; They insist on the importance of staying cool and hydrated so that this summer -besides the intense heat- only good memories remain.
