Investigation into possible riot at Downey juvenile detention center

Police Friday night responded to a report of a riot at the Los Padrinos juvenile detention center in Downey.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the Downey Police Department called the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station at about 8:13 p.m., asking for help with a disturbance.

A large police presence, including policemen in riot gear, could be seen after 11 p.m.

Police also appeared to be searching the golf course and the residential area surrounding the detention center.

The Los Padrinos detention center, closed in 2019, reopened this month after an inspection by the state. Some 300 youths awaiting court hearings were transferred there from two juvenile detention centers deemed inadequate.
