Maybe you’ve never heard of sideloading. To put it simply, it is a feature present in Android, which has unveiled its most popular versions, allowing the installation of APKs from external stores as explained in our tutorial. Absent from Apple, this possibility is coming to iOS 17 according to information revealed on Twitter and on the MacRumors forums.

Installing apps outside the App Store, a big change

The sideloading soon on the iPhone? Big revolution in sight after the replacement of the Lightning port by USB-C. Similar to the previously mentioned change, the coming of this feature only concerns Europe according to a leaker on Twitter.

This means that with iOS 17, iPhone owners will be able to install an application from a store other than the App Store. In other words, a real revolution for this very closed ecosystem which got Apple in trouble, in particular its legal battle with Epic Games.

Inevitably, this change jeopardizes one of the arguments of iOS: its enhanced security and data protection. Apple has always made a point of verifying App Store applications to prevent them from being corrupted. By adding the sideloadingmalicious apps could be installed on an iPhone by unscrupulous hackers.

Why such a decision on the part of Apple?

Apple does not necessarily want to break the security of iOS by allowing installations of applications outside the App Store. This is the new European legislation which forces companies like the Cupertino company to add this functionality.

The iPhone could be exposed to attacks like when Fortnite was offered outside the Play Store by Epic Games and that hundreds of pirated versions have emerged to attack users.

One hope remains: if the sideloading is indeed imposed by the European Union, we imagine that the Cupertino company will take steps to protect its users as it has done for years.
