You are currently viewing iPhone 15 Pro: Why it feels lighter

Apple’s latest Pro iPhones feel lighter than the iPhone 14, according to many testers.

Thanks to the new titanium frame, the iPhone 15 Pro not only looks stylish, but is also lighter than its predecessor. The weight of the iPhone 15 Pro is 9 percent less than that of its predecessor.

Physical miracle for less weight

This is of course unique from an engineering perspective, but it doesn’t necessarily have to feel any less for users. But: According to initial reports, the perceived change is said to be quite enormous.

Changed moment of inertia thanks to new housing

The reason for this is a changed moment of inertia of the device. The titanium casing changes the way weight is transferred. The frame is lighter – and this makes the device feel lighter when moving.

Dr. Urge explained the physics behind it:

The ability to use a phone is based primarily on its mass, but also on its moment of inertia. And since the reduction in mass when going from stainless steel to titanium occurs almost entirely at the perimeter of the phone, the moment of inertia should be reduced more than if the mass were reduced uniformly.

The effect is said to be that you feel like you are holding 15 percent less weight in your hand, not just 9 percent. And that in turn would not only be perceived as an enormous weight loss.
