After the abandonment of Intel in favor of the development of its own systems on chips, Apple is preparing to put Qualcomm and Broadcom aside to develop its own modem, which would make Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, but also cellular. This could potentially increase the autonomy of the iPhone.

Apple has already been working for several years on the development of its own modem to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm. A new report from Bloomberg indicates today that this changeover could take place from 2024, Apple developing its own cellular chip, Wi-Fi and even Bluetooth. It would also allow it to abandon Broadcom.

Apple has made it clear that its goal is to develop its own modem technology for future iPhones and iPads, as the company has been in a legal dispute with Qualcomm over disputes over licensing, patents and royalties related to the chips.

A three-in-one modem signed Apple, which would be released in 2024 or 2025

To ditch Broadcom and Qualcomm, Apple would develop a three-in-one chip. Rumors indicate that Apple would like to kill three birds with one stone and combine a modem that does both cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetoothin a single chip. Bloomberg specifies that the firm would even seek to make other parts by itself, like radio frequency chips and wireless charging components.

All of this would align with Tim Cook’s belief that Apple should control the most important components of the iPhone. Historically, Apple has always relied on many third-party partners to manufacture the components of its devices, but it continues, little by little, to produce its own components.

Bringing Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Cellular into a single in-house chip could be a major improvement in the efficiency of iPhones and iPads, and thus, significantly increase the life of their respective batteries. On the same subject, know that the iPhone 15 Pro could be the king of battery life.

Apple’s new internal modem was supposed to come out this year, but Bloomberg claims that development issues would potentially push its release to late 2024 or early 2025.
