This Sunday, the Iranian authorities announced that a large number of convicted and detainees will be pardoned during protests over the murder of Mahsa Amini. It was not specified how many people will benefit, but it is likely that “tens of thousands” will benefit.

This was announced by the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khameneiin a statement posted on its website: “I agree to pardon and reduce the sentences of a significant number of defendants in connection with recent incidents or who have been convicted.”

It was also made clear that those detained in connection with the protests will only be released if they sign a “statement of repentance and a written commitment not to repeat a similar crime”. This occurs within the framework of the 44th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in February 1979.

The protests began due to the death of the 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish girl, Masha Amini, on September 16 in Tehran, after being detained by the morality police, who accused her of violating the dress code of the Islamic Republic.

For their part, human rights groups affirm that more than 500 people have died in the repression, including 70 minorsand four other people have been hanged.
