Is it possible to repeat the championship in a Super Bowl?

KANSAS-. Before, champions who repeated the title in the competition used to be more common. NFL. It was something that occurred eight times in the first 39 editions of the Super Bowl. But no one has done it since Tom Brady and the New England Patriots they won two in a row after the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs look to become the first back-to-back champions in the last 19 years when they face the San Francisco 49ers on February 11 in Las Vegas.

The Chiefs had a chance to do it three years ago, but lost 31-9 to Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Two other teams — the 2017 Patriots and 2014 Seattle Seahawks — failed to repeat as champions.

In Major League Baseball, a team has not repeated as champion since the New York Yankees won the World Series three times between 1998 and 2000. The Golden State Warriors won consecutive NBA seasons in 2017 and 2018.

These are the champions who have won the Super Bowl in consecutive years:

PACKERS DE GREEN BAY

Vince Lombardi’s team won the first two editions of the Super Bowl and a few years later they named the iconic coach on the championship trophy. The Packers dominated the Chiefs 35-10 in the first Super Bowl played on January 15, 1967. They followed this victory by beating the Oakland Raiders 33-14 in 1968.

Quarterback Bart Starr was proclaimed the Most Valuable Player in both editions. He threw two touchdown passes against Kansas City and had 202 yards and a touchdown against Oakland.

DOLPHINS DE MIAMI

After losing to Dallas in Super Bowl VI, the Dolphins finished the 1972 season with a 14-0 record and capped their only undefeated season with a 14-7 victory over Washington on January 14, 1973.

The following year the Dolphins defeated the Vikings 24-7 in the team’s most recent Super Bowl victory. It was Minnesota’s second of four title-game losses in a seven-year span.

Safety Jake Scott had two interceptions and was named MVP in the victory against Washington. Larry Csonka rushed for 145 yards and had two touchdowns that led him to be considered MVP against Minnesota.

STEELERS DE PITTSBURGH

Chuck Noll, Terry Bradshaw and the “Iron Curtain” won the first of their four Super Bowls in a six-year period by beating Minnesota 16-6 on January 12, 1975. Franco Harris was named MVP of the game after running for 158 yards and a score.

The following year the Steelers beat the Cowboys 21-17 and Lynn Swann was the MVP thanks to his four catches for 161 yards and a touchdown.

But Pittsburgh was cut short in its bid to win three in a row when the Steelers lost the AFC championship game to eventual champion Oakland in December 1976.

The Steelers returned to the Super Bowl after the 1978 season and again beat Tom Landry, Roger Staubach and the Cowboys 35-31. Bradshaw threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns to be named MVP.

Pittsburgh subsequently beat the Los Angeles Rams 31-19 on January 20, 1980 to repeat as champions. Bradshaw was also named Super Bowl MVP for the second consecutive year after throwing for 309 yards for two touchdowns.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and the 49ers capped the 1980s with their third and fourth titles of the decade. The Niners beat Cincinnati 20-16 on January 22, 1989, beating the Bengals in a Super Bowl for the second time. Rice was the MVP after catching 11 passes for 215 yards and a TD.

The 49ers beat Denver 55-10 to win again the following season. Montana excelled with 297 passing yards and five touchdowns for his third Super Bowl MVP.

DALLAS COWBOYS

Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones teamed up to put the Lombardi Trophy back in the hands of “America’s Team” after a 15-year drought. Led by Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin, the Cowboys defeated Buffalo 52-17 on January 31, 1993. Aikman was the MVP, throwing for 273 yards and four touchdowns.

The rematch was closer, but the Cowboys prevailed 30-13, handing coach Marv Levy, quarterback Jim Kelly and the rest of the Bills their fourth straight Super Bowl loss. Smith totaled 132 yards rushing and two touchdowns to earn the MVP.

DENVER BRONCOS

After losing three Super Bowls in a four-year period at the end of the 1980s, John Elway waited eight years and took it upon himself to prevent Brett Favre and the Packers from repeating. The Broncos beat Green Bay 31-24 on January 25, 1998. Terrell Davis had 157 carries and scored touchdowns to be the MVP.

The Broncos defeated Atlanta 34-19 to retain the title. Elway threw for 336 yards and a touchdown to take the MVP.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Brady and Bill Belichick won six Super Bowls together in 20 seasons, with the second and third coming one after the other.

Adam Vinatieri kicked a 41-yard field goal with 4 seconds left as the Patriots beat Carolina 32-29 on Feb. 1, 2004. Brady threw for 354 yards and three touchdowns to take the second of his five NFL awards. MVP and seven rings.

New England defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, led by Andy Reid, the following season, winning 24-21. Deion Branch caught 11 passes and 133 yards to be the MVP.
