Is the hype over? For the first time in its history, ChatGPT suffers a user drop of almost 10%

In February, it was reported that ChatGPT experienced a unparalleled growth by adding 100 million users in just two months, becoming the fastest growing application. Although its position has recently been surpassed by Threads, Meta’s new social network.

However, a decrease in downloads and visits to ChatGPT was reported last month. The data from Similarweb show a 9.7% decrease in website traffic in June. Besides, iPhone app downloads have been steadily declining from its peak in early June, according to data from Sensor Tower.

But traffic from Bing, Google Bard and Character.AI has also decreased, indicating a broader problem beyond ChatGPT. AI is the tech trend of the year, with companies rushing to implement it, though there are concerns about job losses and the threat of rogue AI.

ChatGPT users fell for the first time in its history.

The results of a survey conducted in May revealed that while most Americans are aware of ChatGPT, only a few have used it. Various theories have been put forward to explain this decline, such as the exhaustion of generating false information and the apparent decline in the quality of responses due to OpenAI’s efforts to reduce operating costs.

The decrease in the number of ChatGPT users could also be attributed to other reasonssuch as new regulations in Europe, lawsuits, privacy concerns, and the summer and winter vacation season for students. Besides, the barriers set up by OpenAI might have led some users to seek uncensored AI alternatives.

The decrease in the number of users does not imply the disappearance of this new industry, but rather could indicate an adjustment in the hype surrounding these toolswhich could be beneficial for all.
