Israel discovers a large tunnel between Gaza and Egypt

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) They have discovered a tunnel in the border area between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. The tunnel, with an unusually large dimension, is suspected to be being used for the passage of vehicles between these two areas.

This tunnel was discovered last week along the so-called Philadelphia Corridorthe IDF code name for the narrow, 14-kilometer strip of land that runs parallel to the border between Egypt and the Palestinian coastal enclave, part of Israel’s efforts to uncover all of Hamas’s weapons smuggling routes in the area.

The Israeli militant group’s plan is to do a thorough investigation of this tunnel before proceeding to its demolition and rendering it unusable.

The Gaza Metro

The small territory of Gaza has a real labyrinth of secret tunnels that the militant group has been digging for decades. This network of tunnels serves as both a refuge as a communications network for Hams, as well as serving as a warehouse for its arsenal, a conduit for smuggling goods into the Strip and even for infiltrating enemy territory.

This network of galleys, which Israel calls Gaza Metrohas become a key piece in the military strategy of Hams and a potential danger to Israeli troops.

Think of the Gaza Strip like a layer of civilians and another layer for HamsWe are trying to get to that second layer that Hamas has built, an IDF spokesman said recently.

Types of tunnels

Tunnels first appeared in the early 19th century. the decade of 2000 on the border between Gaza and Egypt. They were mainly involved in smuggling, allowing Palestinians to bring all kinds of goods into the Strip and thus bypass Israeli control.

However, Hamas began to build another type of galleys to attack Israel. On the one hand, the offensive tunnelswhich pass underground through the Gaza perimeter and enter enemy territory. In 2006, a Hamas commando managed to penetrate Israel through one of these two tunnels attack a military postin which two soldiers were killed and a third was kidnappedGilad Shalitwho was held in Gaza for five years.

On the other hand, Hams has also built defensive tunnels inside Gazaintended for the protection and continued operation of its leaders and fighters. These tunnels are more sophisticated, dug to great depths and reinforced with concrete walls. The tunnels inside Gaza are different because Hams uses them on a regular basis. They are probably more comfortable, for spending long periods of time, he says. Daphn Richemond-Barakan expert on underground warfare and professor at Reichman University in Israel.

Gaza is a trap that no military wants to entersays Eitan Shamir, director of the Begin-Sadat center. The high population density makes it almost impossible not to cause collateral damage, and this network of tunnels is also very difficult to find and become a trapsays Shamir.
