According to Israel, it was attacked from the Gaza Strip despite an existing ceasefire. A rocket was fired from there today and fell in an open area on Israeli territory, the Israeli army said.

Warning sirens sounded in the surrounding areas. Residents in and around Ashkelon heard explosions, Israeli media reported. There is no information about possible victims.

Less than 24 hours earlier, a ceasefire had come into force between Israel and militant Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. These fought for five days, which only seemed to calm down slowly after the Egyptian mediated agreement on Saturday.

The fighting began on Tuesday with a large-scale military offensive by Israel against the extremist Palestinian organization Islamic Jihad. In response, rockets rained down on Israeli towns.
