Benny Gantz, a key figure in Israel’s War Cabinet, has announced his resignation.
Gantz is a centrist politician and former popular military leader.
He joined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government shortly after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, in a show of unity.
Gantz had previously said he would leave the government by June 8 if Netanyahu did not formulate a new plan for Gaza.
During the announcement of his resignation yesterday, Gantz asserted that Netanyahu is making, and we quote: “total victory impossible.”
He added that the Israeli government must put the return of hostages captured by Hamas above political survival.
This resignation does not pose an immediate threat to Netanyahu’s government, which still controls a majority coalition in the country’s parliament.
But experts say the Israeli leader will likely rely more on his far-right allies.
