Frankfurt/Main.
After IT problems at Lufthansa, air traffic control closed Frankfurt Airport for landings. The ban has now been lifted.

After several hours of closure, landings are possible again at Frankfurt Airport. This was explained by a spokesman for the operator Fraport. In the morning, German air traffic control stopped the approach and diverted machines to other airports.

The reason was an aircraft jam due to major IT problems in Lufthansa’s systems. This had meant that numerous machines could not take off as planned.

Lufthansa, on the other hand, had stopped all its departures from Frankfurt. The airline is now in the process of restarting its computer systems, a spokesman said. For Thursday, however, a largely normal process is expected again before there are new problems on Friday due to the airport warning strike called by Verdi.

Passengers can switch to the train

Deutsche Bahn recommends passengers who want to switch to rail due to the IT breakdown at Lufthansa to look online for trains that are less popular. “With its ICE connections between the major cities, which run at least every hour, Deutsche Bahn generally offers sufficient capacity to be able to transport the passengers affected,” the group said. “We recommend reserving a seat in any case and checking the occupancy display on bahn.de and in the DB Navigator for trains that are less popular.”

Cause of IT problems probably railway construction work

According to the company, the serious IT problems at Lufthansa were triggered by construction work on a railway line in Frankfurt. Several fiber optic cables from Deutsche Telekom were said to have been severed by an excavator on Tuesday. According to a report by the hessenschau.de portal, the Telekom disruption affected the greater Frankfurt area, with a focus on the north. The airport is in the west of the Main metropolis. (dpa)
