Italy’s data protection regulator is poised to reactivate chatbot ChatGPT on April 30 if its maker, OpenAI, takes “useful steps” to address privacy concerns. The head of the data protection authority Pasquale Stanzione said today in an interview with the Milan daily newspaper “Corriere della Sera”.

The Microsoft Corp. supported companies OpenAI took ChatGPT offline in Italy at the end of March after the authority had temporarily restricted the processing of personal data and initiated an investigation into an alleged violation of data protection regulations.

OpenAI promised transparency

“I think there is a willingness on the part of the company, let’s see,” said Stanzione. In a video conference last week, OpenAI promised to be more transparent about how it handles user data. The company will provide the Italian data protection authority with the requested information.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) ChatGPT has made waves in politics and business. The software has shown over the past few months how well human speech can be imitated. At the same time, there are concerns that such technology could be misused, for example to spread false information. Numerous states are examining regulatory steps.
