This has affected the entire film and television industry, even to ceremonies like the 2023 Emmy Awards, which are postponed until 2024.
This Thursday, August 10, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) and the Fox television network confirmed that after announcing that the 75th Emmy Awards were going to be moved -because the ceremony was planned for next September 18-, it is a fact that the award ceremony for this 2023 will not take place until next year.
In accordance with Deadline, the 2023 Emmy Awards will now take place on Monday, January 15, 2024which falls on a special date in the United States: Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As if that weren’t enough, the same source mentions that the ceremony is going to take a long time, since now it will last three hours (originally it lasted only two). So we will have to wait to meet the winners of the highest recognition for television in the neighboring country.
The new date of the Emmys will complicate the awards season
As we already mentioned before, the 2023 Emmy Awards were originally scheduled for September. With the Writers Guild of America (WGA) walkout dragging on for more than three months and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) entering the his own strike Fox and the Television Academy had been working on alternatives.
In mid-July, various media in Hollywood rumored that the month of January 2024 was emerging as the main option to carry out the 75th Emmy Awards ceremonywhich had not been postponed since 2001 (when the award was moved due to the September 11 attacks in New York).
Although we already have the new date, this change meant that now, Awards season in Hollywood gets a little rough. we say it because the second night of the Creative Arts Emmys (recognizing technical achievements in American television) coincides with the 2024 Golden Globes ceremony. Besides, the Emmy Awards will clash with next year’s Critics Choice Awardswhich will be held on January 14 and also award film and television categories.
Hollywood actors could participate in the Emmy Awards ceremony
Something quite curious is that the award ceremonies have nothing to do with the anger that SAG-AFTRA has with the studios, so technically the actors can participate in the entertainment part of the ceremony. However, without the nominated stars and without the WGA writers working on the show, the Emmy Awards ceremony during a double strike is considered unfeasible, which is why the decision was made to postpone the 2023 ceremony.
