"It's really special": Visitors celebrated Independence Day in style in DC

Thousands of people visited the National Mall to enjoy the traditional fireworks display in the nation’s capital, as well as activities that took place throughout the day.

“I feel very happy because it is my second country and I am very proud,” said Magdalena Espinosa, a DMV resident.

There were many street closures around the National Mall and a large police presence to make sure everyone was safe.

For some, Independence Day in DC is a tradition, but for others, it was their first time.

“I’m a history major in school, so it’s really special that we’re in the nation’s capital,” one student said excitedly.

Likewise, high temperatures hovering in the 90s caused DC to activate its emergency heat plan while people cooled off with bottled water, under the shade of umbrellas and with fans.

A couple also celebrated their second anniversary, saying: “It’s gone by pretty quickly. We specifically chose the 4th of July, such a significant and important holiday for Americans.”

It is a celebration and a time to remember those who fought for the freedom we enjoy today.

“I just love my grandparents, who were American Revolutionary War colored patriots, I don’t want them to be left out, because they played such an important role,” said one man.

And tourists couldn’t help but join the holiday.

“I am from Athens, Greece… and I am very happy. It is a great honor for me to be here,” emphasized a woman, dressed in red, white and blue.

And the grand finale was worth the wait.

“These are the best fireworks we’ve seen in a couple of years,” remarked an attendee after the show ended.

“They did a great job. We finished quite quickly. Everything was nice and easy. Security was good and we had a great time,” he concluded.
