Flirting, the version of flirting without the heaviness, is a bit like the human equivalent of mating rituals in animals, with however a major drawback (for us): humans think, codify, and in everything becomes cultural. The peacock doing the wheel does not wonder if it should instead try to deploy its feathers in a V. The human, on the other hand, will ask lots of questions about the right way to approach the person whom he wishes to seduce.

Flirting are coded signals to which we are supposed to have the key, since they basically obey impulses anchored in our genes since… before Homo was Sapiens. Have we lost these keys? The signals in question should, however, reveal everything to us. If the young woman sitting near the bar is likely to respond favorably to a smile, an opening joke, or if it will seem unbelievably heavy and ruin her start to the evening. If the man who is quietly waiting for his bus will strike up a conversation as long as you show him, with a look, that his charm is not indifferent to you. “To attract potential mates, both men and women engage in flirtatious behaviors to gain attention and potentially spark the sexual or romantic interest of a desired mate.” sums up the American-Norwegian team which devoted a study on this subject in the journal “Evolutionary Psychology” in March 2022. Written like that, it would be almost simple.
