It’s a real box. As of this writing, Avatar 2: The Waterway is in the process of or has already surpassed $2 billion in worldwide box office receipts. The rooms are indeed regaining color when they had been exhausted by the pandemic and the progression of streaming platforms.
Streaming, a Ponzi scheme?
And precisely, James Cameron tackled this subject head on in the podcast Kom Master’s The Business. He doesn’t mince his words about the strategy of the major platforms over the past few years, and even compares streaming to a virus.
I feel like the virus infected everyone when the pandemic hit (and it didn’t just hurt, it killed cinemas)… We’re resurrecting cinema today, but it killed theaters for almost a year… They were all telling a great story to people on Wall Street, about how they were going to create all this content.
And the filmmaker adds: “And from what I could observe from afar because I wasn’t directly involved, it seemed like everyone was throwing money down the drain in order to generate content and constantly regenerate or renew their catalog… But it now seems to me that the viewer must subscribe to 8 or 10 subscriptions to see everything… it is therefore obvious that this situation cannot continue, a priori, and that it is a real Ponzi scheme. I think there will be some regulation thereafter. »
Words are harsh but they have the merit of hitting where it hurts. Consumers are indeed numerous to deplore this fragmentation of the offer of streaming services. Some observers also believe that the colossal expenditure made by platforms to produce their films and series is not sustainable in the long term.
James Cameron also consumes streaming
As if to soften his point a little, James Cameron also recently explained in another interview “that there have been a lot of good things recently”. He specifies : “I liked the Rings of Power I must say. I think they really succeeded in their “landing”. It was no small feat. I think they did a good job. I found it very cinematic. I just wish it was on the big screen (laughs). »
