Late yesterday afternoon, James Gunn And Peter Safran they disclosed the first batch of DC Studios projects keeping us to specify that the DCU extension it will not be a mere copy of what has been achieved up to now by Marvel. It won’t be about the “Marvel 2.0” Gunn specifies first of all, anticipating intentions for the near future.

James Gunn assures: “The DCU will be neither Marvel 2.0 nor the Gunnverse”

Apparently the main goal of James Gunn, at least according to recent statements granted to Cbr And Comic book, is not to simply imitate the Marvel with the DCU extensionbut to put to all the acquaintances and experiences that have shaped him to date with Disney, Marvel herself and DC:

A lot of people think it’s just going to be Marvel 2.0 and I certainly learned a lot at Marvel. I think our project will stand out in many ways. I think one of the reasons I love DC is that it’s a different universe in every way. It’s an alternate world. With Marvel, generally, it’s New York, Chicago, San Francisco… Here at DCU we have Metropolis, Gotham, Themyscira and Atlantis, and that’s the world we’re creating.

Subsequently James Gunn revealed that the DCU extensionOverall, it will be different from the MCU from an introductory point of view, being much more planned:

We are entering a world where superheroes have long been around in one form or another. We’re going to tell a big central story which is like with Marvel Studios, except the situation is more planned, as we’ve got a team of writers together to craft it. We’re also creating a universe similar to Star Wars where there are different times and different places and different things, or like Game of Thrones where the characters are a little bit more morally complex.

Obviously the conjunction key will be right there “sharing”, while also maintaining active detached projects (the film by Joker is an example. If you want to retrieve it, you can find it on Amazon).

I started [Guardiani della Galassia] with a story about what that trilogy was, where it started and where it ended. That’s just the abridged version of what we’re working on right now. I’ve been within a company that has done very well. It’s very different from us. Marvel hadn’t thought about everything ahead of time, but they did a lot of things very well. I like what Kevin [Feige]Lou [D’Esposito] and the old gang manage to do with movies. We have a lot to prove. It will be up to us to prove to the public what our universe is, how it is connected, clearly delimit what is the DCU and what is Elseworlds, and thus move forward.

Like this James Gunn also talked about the concept of “continuity”, reporting it is important that the films are connected and that at the same time, however, they must also be accessible at all, without the obligation to have seen everything before. For the director, then, the concept of “single” applied to each individual film. Another goal is to achieve films in which it is also possible to trace the unique touch of his creatives. Not an assembly line churning out identical films, but a collection of distinct voices. He recently spoke about this with DC. comsaying that:

Even though it’s a connected universe, it’s really important to me that the individual writers and directors of the projects leave their own expression, just like they do in the comics. It doesn’t have to be all the same. Different artists must bring markedly different looks, feel and tone. This is not the Gunnverse. I want each project to have the feelings of the individual artist who is working on it, giving them a lot of freedom, as long as it works, without creating films that are all in the same tone.

Based on what we know, at the moment James Gunn is involved in 3 projects: Superman: Legacies (expected for July 2025), The Authority And Commandos creatures.
