Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said at the start of the G7 meeting in Karuizawa, as his ministry announced on Monday, that it is important to build “constructive and stable” relations with China in order to deal with global challenges. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) will take part in the meeting on behalf of Germany.

At a working lunch on Sunday evening, Hayashi and his colleagues from the G7 agreed that China, as a member of the international community, must act responsibly. The ministers called for a peaceful solution to the Taiwan conflict and said they would resist any unilateral attempts to use force to change the status quo. Peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits are essential “for the security and prosperity of the international community.” China regards the democratic island republic of Taiwan as a breakaway territory that should be reunited with the mainland, if necessary using military force.
