Jefferson County authorities remove restrictions on access to the Clear Creek River

DENVER, Colorado – After a month, Jefferson County has lifted the water restrictions on Clear Creek in Golden just in time for the 4th of July.

As of 10 am Monday, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Golden made the decision to lift restrictions limiting water activities in Clear Creek. These restrictions were in place from June 1.

According to county authorities, water flow measurements have shown a continuous decline since the closure on June 1.

Restrictions had closed the creek to tubing and swimming after a record amount of rain caused water levels to rise rapidly in a short period of time.

“We’ve had a good snow year compared to other years, so the amount of water in the creek this year is higher than it has been in recent years,” said Fire Marshal Scott Case.

Although the restrictions have been lifted just before Independence Day, the authorities continue to encourage visitors to exercise extreme caution in the water 7 have provided the following advice on how to stay safe:

  • Water temperature, exposed rocks, eroded rocks, potential obstacles, and other safety considerations can still be dangerous for visitors, so use caution.
  • Keep an eye out for pets and children, as they can be swept away quickly if they lose their balance or fall unexpectedly. The surface may seem manageable, but the current below can be so strong that it may be impossible to stand up.
  • If someone falls into the water, don’t jump in to rescue them. Keep an eye on them as best you can and follow them down the river along the bank until the rescue teams arrive.
  • Clear Creek is not a “calm river” for floating. The use of personal flotation devices and life jackets is strongly recommended in any water level. Helmets and water shoes are also recommended to prevent cuts and slips.
  • Water activities and drug or alcohol use do not mix. The chances of suffering bodily injury are increased when you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Clear Creek runs through downtown Golden and is often used by tubers.
