Man who allegedly stole car in San Benito charged with kidnapping

Juan Carlos Cabrera, who is a Brownsville resident, was charged with aggravated kidnapping and robbery after allegedly taking a vehicle with a person inside it, San Benito Police reported.

This incident occurred on Wednesday, August 2 at approximately 3:38 pm. At that time, San Benito Police officers went to the Circle K convenience store, located at 2410 West Highway 83, to investigate the theft of a vehicle.

Inside the stolen car was a 39-year-old disabled woman, who was sitting in the back seat, it was said.

Reviewing surveillance camera footage from the store and nearby businesses, police concluded that a man loitering in the store’s parking lot was the suspect in the robbery. A description of this person was then obtained and distributed to the local media.

Later, the woman was found safe and sound, since she was released in a restaurant in Harlingen. Shortly after the stolen vehicle was located by the Los Fresnos police and the suspect was arrested.

Cabrera is facing a $52,500 bond and was transferred to the Carrizales Rucker Detention Center.
