The United States ambassador to Russia, Lynne Tracy, has assured that the American journalist Evan Gershkovich is in “good health” after visiting him in prison in the Russian city of Yekatarinburg, where he is being held on charges related to espionage.
“Ambassador Tracy reported that Evan continues to appear to be in good health and remains strong, despite the circumstances,” said the spokeswoman for the US diplomatic mission in the country, Jenny Palmer, according to CNN.
Moscow accuses the correspondent of the newspaper ‘The Wall Street Journal’ of collecting secret information regarding the activities of a military company. The journalist was arrested after having been collecting information about the Wagner Group, owned by the oligarch Yevgeni Prigozhin, and until recently implicated in the military offensive in Ukraine.
Washington has repeatedly demanded the release of Gershkovich, who previously worked for the French news agency AFP and the Russian newspaper ‘The Moscow Times’ and will remain in preventive detention until August 30.
Gershkovich’s latest article, which faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison, was published by ‘The Wall Street Journal’ and dates from March 28 under the headline ‘Russia’s economy is beginning to unravel’.
