The operations of the Inca Manco Cápac airport, located in the city of Juliaca, Puno, were suspended this afternoon after a group of protesters tried to take over the terminal facilities, as happened weeks ago.

“Our Inca Manco Cápac airport in Juliaca has suspended its operations from today, January 6 in the afternoon, due to the acts of violence and the lack of security in its vicinity that put the safety of our team and passengers at risk,” Andean Airports of Peruoperator of the terminal.

Shortly after the suspension of operations, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) reported the start of preventive work on the runway of the Juliaca airport. “We will announce the return of air operations, in order to guarantee safe transportation for the benefit of citizens,” he said in a statement.

Andean Airports indicated that operations would be resumed “when the conditions that guarantee safety exist.”

The day before, Prime Minister Alberto Otárola stressed that despite the protests in various cities in the interior of the country, none of the critical assets of the State had been affected and that all the air terminals were operating normally.

In it third day of protestsin which citizens demand the advancement of elections, a new Constitution, the closure of Congress and the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the seizures of highways increased and more than 50 blockades were reported, in Puno, Cusco, Madre de God, among other cities.

FACT:

  • The Juliaca terminal was closed for several days on December 14 after protesters burned tires outside the airport and tried to take it by force.
