After the zombie movie with Last train to Busan and animation with Seoul Station, the decidedly very eclectic South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho returns with Jung_E, a science fiction film, available from Friday January 20, 2023 at 09:00 am on Netflix. The filmmaker situates his action in a post-apocalyptic future where humans have had to flee the Earth, which has become uninhabitable due to climate change. Men have found refuge in sanctuary arches built in space, but following the secession of three of these sanctuary arches, a civil war breaks out. The film begins 40 years after the start of this conflict as a team of scientists work to create an ultimate soldier whose incredible combat skills could end it.

effective entertainment

To develop this warrior with exceptional abilities, researchers are trying to create a combat AI from the brain structure of Captain Yun Jung-yi, a true war heroine who won countless victories before falling in battle. Thirty-five years later, it is Yun Seo-hyun, his own daughter who has become research director of the project called Jung_E, who has the difficult task of developing this soldier in whom all hopes are placed. From this starting postulate, Yeon Sang-ho offers a film which, if it does not revolutionize the genre, remains effective and intelligent entertainment. A feature film that is reminiscent of this science fiction classic that is terminator, notably during the scenes where Captain Yun Jung-yi fights alone against machines. These action scenes are also rather well put together thanks to very successful special effects. As for the question of whether an AI is capable of developing feelings, again, it’s hard not to think about I, Robot with Will Smith, at AI, Artificial Intelligence by Steven Spielberg or, more recently, to Ex Machina.

The last film of the formidable Kang Soo-yeon

Rather successful, Jung_E is not, however, free from weaknesses. The character of Yun Seo-hyun’s superior in particular is far too caricatured to be believable. As vain as he is ambitious, he hides his incompetence under bluster and humor that only makes him laugh. Small disappointment also concerning the end of the film, which leaves the viewer a bit in front of a huge question mark without providing a satisfactory answer. These small flaws are nevertheless only a small thing compared to the amazing duo of actresses who carry this film. Kim Hyun-Joo perfectly embodies this soldier who is neither totally human nor totally robot. As for Kang Soo-yeon, for whom this is the very last film since she died on May 7, 2022 at the age of 55, shortly after filming, she is simply wonderful.
