According to Ukrainian sources, Russian troops are evacuating the city of Enerhodar, on the site of which they have occupied the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. People were being transported to the cities of Berdyansk and Prymorsk, both on the Azov Sea coast, the Ukrainian General Staff said.

The first residents to be taken away are said to be those who acquired Russian citizenship at the beginning of the occupation. The evacuation was ordered by the Russian-appointed administration of the annexed area in southern Ukraine in view of the expected Ukrainian counter-offensive.

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is the largest in Europe. Its site was hit several times during the war, for which Ukrainian and Russian troops blame each other. Efforts to set up a security zone around the nuclear power plant have failed.
