The French delegation revealed Thursday that the Quebec singer would represent France in Liverpool next May. The young woman confided her first impressions to BFMTV.

It is she who will represent France at Eurovision 2023. On Thursday, France Télévisions revealed that the Quebec singer La Zarra had been chosen to defend the tricolor flag in Liverpool, on May 13 in Liverpool. A few moments after the announcement, the young artist confided her impressions to BFMTV … without hiding anything about her ambitions:

“(I’m aiming) for first (place),” she said with a smile. “I didn’t agree to lose! I’m going to fight.”

An American side, “a little more show”

This is not the first time that a Quebecer has represented France in the Eurovision Song Contest. And this choice brought luck to the delegation in 2001, when France ranked 4th in the competition thanks to Natasha St-Pier and her title I only have my soul. La Zarra, whose universe is at the crossroads of pop, French song and rap, intends to make this singularity a strength:

“I am in love with the French variety of yesteryear,” she explains. “We will understand that I have certain codes. In Europe or around the world, when you think of France – whether it’s the rolling of the ‘r’, the melodies or the French chic… I think that I will be able to defend that. And on the other hand, I will be able to bring this American side which is a little more showy.”

Unlike many of her Eurovision predecessors, La Zarra is not unknown to the public. Active since 2016, she has published several songs and covers that have met with success on the Web, before experiencing her first hit in 2021 thanks to the tube you will go awaytaken from his first album Treachery.

Furthermore, La Zarra was not submitted to a pre-selection. Whereas, for several years, the nomination of the French candidate was almost always the subject of a television competition during which viewers were asked to vote, the singer was chosen internally. Alexandra Redde-Amiel, head of the delegation, explained that it is a “parenthesis”, because of their meeting with La Zarra which “changed the turn of things”. Especially since the delegation has been trying to involve her for several years.

The title she will perform in Liverpool to represent France has not yet been revealed. We simply know that she wrote it and that she will remain faithful to her taste for the “mixing of genres”:

“It’s about hope,” she sums up. “It’s a bit dramatic, but I think that in the drama we can seek the truth and that way we can move forward.”
