The twins Laura and Laís were born in the early afternoon of this Tuesday (4/25), at Hospital Santa Lúcia, in Brasília. They are the result of a rare pregnancy, of the mono-mono type, when the embryos share the same placenta and amniotic sac.
Meiry, the mother of the babies, is doing well. Laís and Laura will stay in an incubator for the next few days to gain more weight. Laís was born weighing 2.2 kg and Laura, weighing 1.8 kg.

Laura will have to wait to undergo heart surgeries that were already planned, due to the consequences of gestational malformation. Obstetrician Juliana Rezende said that, ideally, the twin will still have to gain 700 grams of weight to be able to undergo the procedures.
“Probably, Laura will have to undergo several heart surgeries in the next few days, since her condition is complex”, informed the doctor.
What is a mono-mono pregnancy?
Mono-mono pregnancies occur in only 0.02% of cases worldwide. They occur when twins share the same placenta, that is, they are monochorionic and identical, and they are also monoamniotic, being in the same amniotic sac. In this type of pregnancy, the risk of the babies dying is higher, reaching 70% in certain periods of pregnancy.
“I’m lucky. I know about her condition, but Laura means victorious, and that’s how I feel. With everything that could have happened, feeling my daughters with me is like having won the lottery several times in a row”, said Meiry, in an interview with metropolises, before childbirth.
