Having high cholesterol increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. After all, the accumulation of fat hinders the flow of blood in the body, which can damage the health not only of the heart, but of your body in general, including the feet.

According to orthopedist Julian Machado, from Ortholife at Hospital Santa Lúcia Sul, in Brasília, people with high levels of LDL cholesterol, better known as “bad” cholesterol, may experience cramps and swelling in the feet. With the narrowing of the vessels caused by the accumulation of fat, the drop in the supply of oxygen and nutrients carried by the blood can cause the symptoms.

The doctor says that patients who take medicine to deal with the problem can also suffer from muscle pain.

The main reasons for high bad cholesterol, according to the Brazilian Company of Hospital Services (Ebserh), are:

  • Genetic causes;
  • Conditions that, when uncontrolled, lead to increased cholesterol, such as some kidney diseases, hypothyroidism, obesity and diabetes;
  • Inadequate diet, with high intake of saturated fats;
  • Sedentary lifestyle;
  • Alcoholism.

Furthermore, it is false to say that high cholesterol is exclusive to adults. As the condition is also linked to obesity, children and adolescents can suffer from the problem. The diagnosis can be made by blood test.

According to Ebserh, healthy eating and frequent physical activity are the best ways to prevent high levels of fat in the body. Depending on the blood cholesterol levels, the patient may need medication treatment.
