NEW YORK – New York lawmakers and activists gather outside City Hall Friday to call for passage of a bill that would provide free health insurance to all state residents regardless of immigration status.

Among the elected officials who will meet, along with more than 100 community members, are Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, New York City Public Defender Jumaane Williams, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, Senator Gustavo Rivera, Assemblymembers Jessica González-Rojas, Zohran Mamdani, Ron Kim, Steven Raga, George Alvarez, Yudelka Tapia, and Manny De Los Santos.

They each urge the State Assembly to pass Coverage for All legislation, or Coverage for All, (S2237A/A3020A), which fue presented by senator Gustavo Rivera, when they return next week. The bill will expand health coverage to low-income New Yorkers, regardless of their immigration status.

Last week, before the end of the regular legislative session, the state Senate approved the bill, however, the Assembly did not take the bill to the floor.

The Coverage for All bill would make it easier to cover thousands of essential workers who have kept New York’s economy afloat during and after the pandemic, lawmakers say.
