Career of Ali Güngörmüs

Ali Güngörmüs was born in Pageou-Tunceli (Turkey). He lived there with his mother, three sisters and three brothers until he was 10 years old, while his father worked as a sewer welder in Munich. Every winter the father came to Pageou for several weeks to visit his family. In 1986 the political situation in Turkey became tense. That year the family moved to Germany together.

After a few difficult school years in an immigrant class, Ali saw a ray of hope in eighth grade: home economics. He enjoyed experimenting with flavors and spices. He decided to become a chef.

His parents were initially not very enthusiastic about his desire to train as a cook after secondary school. Ali did it anyway and applied to the “Wirtshaus am Rosengarten”, a traditional company in Munich, where he spent the next three years as an apprentice. Despite the difficulties and everyday racism, Ali managed to pass the final exam with a perfect grade. There was also a scholarship for the gifted.

Then his career in upscale gastronomy began. In the starred restaurant “Glockenbach” he learned everything about fine dining. Two years later, two-star restaurant “Tantris”, German cuisine in a sophisticated way.

In 2001, at the age of 24, Ali became head chef in his former boss’s new Munich restaurant. At 27, he bought the Hamburg restaurant “Le Canard”, renamed it “Le Canard Nouveau” and received a Michelin star for it. In 2014 he opened the restaurant “Pageou” in his native Munich and in 2022 “Pera Meze”.

In the meantime, Ali Güngörmüs has also established himself as a face in the media: in “Die Küchenschlacht” and “Potgeldjäger” as a juror, in “Grill den Henssler” and “Grill den Profi” as the professional chef.

Ali Güngörmus has three children: two from his relationship with Stephanie Schöner, one daughter from his relationship with Marie-Lisa Gargiulo. He likes to play soccer in his free time.
