Electronics giant LG has launched a major recall of 86-inch TVs in the US. The equipment, which weighs around 45 kilograms, is in danger of falling over – and injuring or even killing people.

That reports that Online magazine digital trends with reference to the US Consumer Protection Recall Notice. The recall reveals an unforeseen weakness of the giant televisions: depending on how they are set up, they can be unstable and can therefore pose an accident risk that should not be underestimated.

“An entrapment hazard exists that could cause injury or death to children and others,” the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall notice said.

Twelve incidents reported

LG is therefore forced to recall four models of the large 86-inch televisions because the stands supplied became unstable and fell over in a number of cases. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in any of the twelve known cases. According to the current state of knowledge, however, LG believes in user error: the televisions or their stands are basically not dangerous. The problem was caused by incorrect installation of the stands.

Digital Trends has reached out to LG for comment. The group explains its view of things as follows:

Statement by LG

“LG has become aware that improper installation of the pedestal on certain LG 86-inch UHD TV models may cause a weak point in the integrity of the TV pedestal.

However, this weakness only occurs if the stand is not properly installed.* If the stand is installed exactly as described in the product instructions, and all screws provided are used and properly tightened, this structural failure will not occur.”
